No one can tell Desiigner he isn’t having the best year ever. Between his appearance on Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo cut “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 2” and Desiigner’s original “Panda,” the 19-year-old Brooklyn rapper’s name has breeched into the upper echelon on rap royalty.
Not only does he have the ears of West’s million plus fans, but works under the counsel of rap and business titans like Yeezy, who signed him, Mike Dean, who is executive producing his debut album The Life of Desiigner, and Pusha T, the newly minted President of G.O.O.D. Music.
For Interview Magazine, the latter G.O.O.D. Music affiliate sat down with Desiigner—born Sidney Royel Selby III—for a non-studio related one-on-one session. Pusha traded in his boss hat for a journalist hat to chop it up with the label’s newest signee about musical inspirations, being a champ for Brooklyn, the magnetic effects of his swag and letting the “old soul” in him flourish on wax.
“People thought I was an old dude; it came with my swagger,” Desiigner told Push. “I’m a creator; I’m into this music sh*t. I wanted to build it up and give it to my peers. I was a singer. I used to sing to the girls, ‘Happy Birthday’ and all that. Did the Temptations. I always knew how to play around with my voice, make people laugh. I’d be crazy. Just my swag I guess. God blessed me.”
Let’s just say all his responses are equally as spirited. Read the full sit-down here.
