The death of David Bowie left many reflecting on the iconic artist’s impact on the music industry. The latest to honor Bowie, mixing mastermind Terry Urban calls his new mashup, “a dedication for two artists that have influenced me greatly. #RIPDavidBowie #ripbiggie.”
The DJ juxtaposes a Bowie interview and 1972 song “Moonage Daydream”—which made a comeback in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy— with a verse dropped by the Notorious B.I.G. in 1999’s “Dead Wrong.” A play on the Brit’s nickname, “Ziggy Stardust,” Urban titles his track “Biggie Stardust.”
Both Bowie and Biggie have been featured in past Urban mashups. Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” and “Let’s Dance” got the Lady Gaga treatment in 2009 on mixtape Lady Stardust. The DJ also debuted multi-track projects with Biggie songs like “Wake Up,” “I Got a Story to Tell,” “Get Money,” mixed with Lana Del Rey in 2012 and FKA Twigs in 2015.
The newest mashup dips into the idea of life versus religion. The Bowie interview from the archives stitches together the rebellious nature of both late artists and their words regarding the divine—all in an effort to answer, “What did David Bowie think about David Bowie?”
