Drake owned yet another Saturday night (Jan. 30) with the release of his latest single “Summer Sixteen.” Placing a host of adversaries in his crosshairs, Drizzy was “playin’ dirty, not clean,” firing off bars seemingly aimed at Meek Mill, Jay Z and Kanye West. But one stray was sent to an unlikely recipient: President Barack Obama. Sending a direct message to the Commander-in-Chief, the OVO head honcho warned, “Tell Obama that my verses are just like the whips that he in, they bulletproof.” But why aim at the prez?
It looks as though Drake might have taken offense to Obama’s rap music preferences. During an interview with YouTuber Adande Thorne earlier this month, POTUS was asked for his pick in a rhetorical battle between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Obama went with the latter.
“Gotta go with Kendrick,” he simply said. “I think Drake is an outstanding entertainer, but Kendrick — his lyrics, his last album was outstanding. Best album, I think, of last year.”
Naturally, as what usually happens on the Internet, the masses put the pieces together and formed their own opinions. While some saw Drake’s aim at the President as a boss move, others chimed in to inquire why no direct shots were sent K. Dot’s way. This reignited a debate that has been going on since the conception of their respective careers; Kendrick Lamar even became a trending topic on Twitter.
Here’s a look at what a few folks had to say:
Drake gave Obama some bars. nobody is safe bro.
