During a recent stop at London’s Radar Radio, rapper D.R.A.M. sat on the hot seat with host Kamilla Rose.
The Virginia rapper, whom is seemingly always in a good mood, discussed the skyrocket success he had with 2014’s “Cha-Cha” and his new track with Lil Yachty, “Broccoli.” D.R.A.M, né Shelley Massenburgh-Smith, revealed he met up with Lil Yatchy in Rick Rubin’s coveted Malibu studio, Shangri LA. After that, they got to work in the studio and the rest, as they say, is history. For the most part, Smith reveals he didn’t quite expect “Broccoli” to do so well.
It landed on Billboard’s Hot 100 list and in a nutshell, D.R.A.M. credits being the ultimate optimist and just happiness as the formula to reaching for the stars. “Just acknowledging the fact that everybody is so infatuated with just darkness and frowning—and is not cool to smile and sh*t like that,” he told Rose. “I think that’s the best part for me to smile, the happy part. And I just wanted the music to reflect that. We came up with this happy go lucky sound. “
After all, it’s commendable that a song about a vegetable has garnered him such high accolades. “I’ve always liked broccoli an’ sh*t. So it’s good,” he recently told Billboard. “I remember my mama used to use that for the vegetable side for a lot of meals, with some butter and some salt and pepper. It’s real good. Mix it with the rice, whatever the meat is. So I’ve always been a fan of broccoli — intake has been the same, the record’s just a coincidence.”
