After releasing a sultry extended playlist entitled Time back in February, London-bred chanteuse and DJ Mustard protégé, Ella Mai, is back with a new batch alluring R&B tunes with her latest EP CHANGE.
Executive produced in its entirety by the West Coast hip-hop producer/phenom, the project plays like a heartfelt throwback to ’90s R&B. “I’m a big fan of music from that era,” Mai, who is now officially signed to Mustard’s 10 Summers label, shared. The five-song collection is also a landmark moment for the Jamaican-half Irish beauty, as it’s the first official release on the 10 Summers and Interscope label partnership.
As for the context of the project, Mai describes it as a thematic continuation of Time, which chronicled the slow demise of a heartfelt relationship. However, this time around, “newfound love, new emotions and new experiences,” fittingly anchor CHANGE as her confident, in-the-pocket vocals deliver of spoonful of emotions. “It’s about finding someone new and knowing how to appreciate what he’s giving you in comparison to what you were dealing with.”
CHANGE is now available on all digital platforms. Press play and take it for an inaugural spin below.
