The latest installment of Eminem and Sway’s candid interview dropped on Thursday (Sept. 13), it got pretty political. During the discussion, Em touched on the backlash he received after his Donald Trump cypher on BET, his support of Colin Kaepernick, and an interesting visit from the Secret Service. In the next part of his interview with Sway, Eminem discusses backlash over his Trump cypher, support, from Colin Kaepernick and a visit from Secret Service.
When on the discussion regarding his viral BET cypher, Eminem admitted that he received some negative feedback. Even so, he stated that it was important to make that move, especially as a white rapper. “I got backlash for the Trump cypher, and you know, it is what it is,” he said. “At least when when s**t is all said and done, maybe I can just be on the right side of history.”
He suggested some of the backlash stemmed from people critiquing his bars. “That’s not what it is about. You’re missing the whole point,” he noted. “I’m trying to say this also to my fan base who might have voted for him. a lot of people in my fan base probably did.”
While most critics just shared their thoughts on social media, Em got a visit from the Secret Service in order to vet his intentions. “They came to my studio,” he said. “They were just asking me questions about my lyrics to see what the intent was behind them and if I was making an actual threat or just expressing myself.”
He also explained his decision to attack Trump. “The thing that set me off the most that really set me off that i started going off with the pen, is the Kaepernick thing,” he said. “And how he kept changing the narrative.”
As previously reported, Kaepernick was blacklisted from the NFL for kneeling during the national anthem in protest of social injustice. Nike recently debuted an ad campaign featuring the athlete, which led to nationwide boycotts. To that, Em said: “stop making it f**king personal about yourself. You have nothing to do with this.”
