Get ready to carve into some new tunes this Turkey Day weekend with the arrival of Erykah Badu’s forthcoming mixtape.
Titled You Cain’t Use My Phone, the project was influenced by Drake’s “Hotline Bling” melody, she told The Fader. “After I heard that song it inspired me,” she said. “I was feeling it really and I started making the songs. No particular reason though.” The “On and On” singer also revealed that every song on the mixtape is phone related.
This news arrives a few weeks after her stellar cover of Drizzy’s infectious tune, which she created with producer Zach Witness, who also worked on her mixtape. “We didn’t know what it was going to be,” she said. “When I released ‘Hotline Bling,’ I didn’t make any announcements, I just put it up on my Soundcloud. I just put it on my Facebook.”
With regards to her friendship with the Toronto native, she said, “We’re very good friends and we had some great talks. He’s an inspiration to me. Sonically he’s in a place where I want to be. It’s halfway between where I was and halfway to where I am now.”
Badu will also host the Soul Train Awards, set to air on Nov. 29 on Centric.
