Erykah Badu recently stopped by NPR’s Tiny Desk on Aug. 14, to deliver a mesmerizing medley of her greatest hits. In conjunction with her performance, Badu also dished on her interests to get into stand-up comedy.
During the Tiny Desk concert, Badu introduced her seven-piece band, many of whom she’s worked with for several years. She then launched into a soothing performance of “Rimshot,” which is from her 1997 debut album Baduizm. She also played other hits like “Green Eyes,” from 2000’s Mama’s Gun.
In the interview portion, she revealed that she has aspirations of being a stand-up comedian. “I would hope. I want to,” she said when asked about getting into the new profession. “Michael Blackson always says, when you come to LA next time, you’re going to go on stage. Just do it. Just go do it and see. Just try it. So we’ll see. Let’s see if that’s my thing, one of my things. Could be. Could be not. We gotta see”
Erykah may be skeptical about her stand-up comedy skills, but she is experimenting with the art form on-screen. The singer has reportedly landed a supporting role in the upcoming comedy What Men Want, which stars Taraji P. Henson. The film is a gender-flipped remake of thee 2000 hit What Women Want (originally starring Mel Gibson). So, whether it’s on the big screen or the small stage, comedy may not be a bad side hustle to explore
