Social media and smartphones have become second nature for a lot of us. While out with our friends in real life, we also check our Facebook notifications. Dinner at a swanky restaurant isn’t complete unless a photo of our hors d’oeuvre and the main course surfaces on the ‘Gram, and a celebrity retweet is the new electronic autograph.
Erykah Badu–despite her immense social media presence–isn’t really here for it. So it’s no surprise that her first single since 2010 from her forthcoming mixtape Caint Use My Phone, is aptly titled “Phone Down” in which she tells bae to, well..put your phone down.
Badu, who is this year’s host of the Soul Train Awards, premiered the single via periscope Thursday evening (November 5). Wearing her trademark top hat and glasses, she nodded and kept quiet giving fans tuning in a chance to hear her new tune.
