Parisian producer, Mercer just got a deeper rework by one of VIBE’s 30 DJ’s to watch in 2014, Tchami, on the track “Turn It Up.” The fellow Frenchman producer takes Mercer’s track, flips it upside down and adds his own profound sound for quite the drummy house beat.
VIBE sat down to talk to the originator of the track, Mercer, and discuss what sets him apart from other French producers, aspiring collaborations plus what he has in store for the New Year.

VIBE: How would you describe your sound?
Mercer: A combination of warm and energetic sounds. I’m always trying to find that balance between aggressive elements and simple arrangements. I also make songs that I would want to play in my shows. When I’m in the studio I try and imagine the kind of sound that’ll make a crowd go crazy.
Who/what are some of your influences?
I try not to limit myself musically. Growing up I listened to a lot of pop and dance music, which probably had the biggest impact on me.
There has been a robust amount of talent coming from the French lately (i.e. DJ Snake, Tchami, Gesaffelstein, etc.) what separates you from other Parisians?
Mainly my beard and sun glasses. All jokes a side, DJ Snake and Tchami have been close friends of mine for years. We’ve each created our own unique sound where fans can say, ‘Hey this sounds like Snake…or that’s definitely a Tchami drop.’ There’s a lot of pressure being a French producer, the key is finding your niche.
Who would you ideally want to collaborate with in the future?
Miley Cyrus. (Is that joke overplayed?)
‘Welcome to the Jungle’ was a staple song in 2013; can we expect another banger like that in the New Year?
2013 was a real coming out year for me, thanks, in large part to tracks like “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sumpreme”- Fans can only expect bigger and better tracks in 2014!
What do you have in store for 2014?
I have an upcoming release on Mad Decent called “Russian Roulette”, which I’m very excited about! I also have some monster collaborations in the works. DJ Snake and I just finished up a track called “Lunatic” – definitely keep your ears peeled for that one! On top of that I’m wrapping up projects with Martin Garrix and Dillon Francis.
