The lyrical spat that still remains one of hip-hop’s most memorable moments was Jay Z and Nas’ beef in 2001. The war of words produced “Super Ugly” on Jay’s end, and “Ether” from Nas, but given the heated exchange that steadily escalated, fellow rappers were reportedly backed into picking a side, as was the case for veteran lyricist Fat Joe.
In an interview with This Is 50, the “All The Way Up” rapper shared his recollection of the occurrence and how he felt following Jay and Nas’ reconciliation, which unfortunately left Fat Joe’s Terror Squad entity and Roc-A-Fella Records at odds.
“When Nas caught beef with Jay Z, they threw the battery in my back. Like, ‘We got beef with this man’ and I’m all muscle,” Fat joe said. “I’m like ‘alright.’ I’m moving a certain way and the moral to the story is that there was bad blood between Roc-A-Fella and Terror Squad for a long time and the next thing I know I seen Nas with Jay Z and there was peace. But it left me in the outskirts. He didn’t pick up the phone like, ‘Yo, I’m about to squash this.’ I would’ve told him go get money. I’m all about getting money, so I would’ve told him go get money. Now me and these ni**as got beef because I was reping you hard.”
