Fergie stopped by Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning to discuss her comeback single “L.A. Love (La La La)” featuring YG. Marking her first solo effort in eight years, the Black Eyed Peas’ lead also spoke about her upcoming album, the current hip-hop climate, and competition with like likes of Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea.
In the midst of discussing friendly competition among other female emcees, Fergie announced that she has a track with YMCMB’s first lady. But, of course, she wouldn’t spin the track.
“Healthy competition, there’s nothing wrong with that,” she said of rap’s current stars. “That’s normal. That’s just like flirting, it’s a normal human thing. It’s healthy.”
Fergie also related to the criticism Iggy Azalea has been subjected to as a white woman in hip-hop. Recalling the negative commentary she received as part of Black Eyed Peas, Will.i.am’s leading lady said she found inspiration in her naysayers.
“It actually fueled me. I was like ‘You know what? These fools are just sitting there saying this. They have no idea who I am. I have worked for this my entire life. I am ambitious. I am an overachiever. I’m gonna do this and I see it so clearly.’ And it’s like, ‘You know what? I probably listen to more hip-hop than any of these fools.”
