Frank Ocean is free to roam about the indie world.
It was announced on Tuesday (Aug. 23) that the artist is now relieved of his duties from Def Jam. The singer fulfilled his contact with the release of the visual album Endless, making Blonde an independent release, The Fader reports. The projects were released just a few hours after each other last weekend. Credits of Endless include Def Jam, while Blonde has been confirmed by Metadata on Apple Music that the copyright stems from Boys Don’t Cry.
Forbes reports the news can start a streaming war between Apple and Universal Music Group (UMG). With UMG being the publishing home to Def Jam, the loss of Blonde has allegedly caused the company to threaten to pull all exclusive content from its other artists like Kanye West and Drake off of Apple Music. Exclusive music streaming has been the talk of 2016 with Tidal being home to the exclusive releases of Rihanna’s Anti, Beyonce’s Lemonade, Kanye’s The Life of Pablo and a special track by Jay Z.
Frank hasn’t commented on his indie status, but we’re sure there’s more to come from the singer.
