French Montana and Drake are back together again with a new trap-heavy song “No Stylist,” which dropped on Thursday (Sept. 20). The song is reportedly an ode to Dapper Dan, Slick Rick, and Run DMC, and their impact on the culture through the fashion realm.
“Iced out, no stylist,” the Moroccan-born rapper spits. “New Chanel, Saint Laurent, Gucci belt…Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, that’s on you.”
“See, it’s this thing with me being from the Bronx, where hip hop started the mecca of hiphop,I always felt like it got overlooked when it came to fashion,” French told Beats1’s Zane Lowe about the importance of style to hip-hop.
“I feel like people that changed fashion was the icons that we looked up to…there’s 99.9 people out there that don’t go to Fashion Week, they could dress better than anybody on that runway. We want to give that dope boy on the corner.” He also revealed that the video, which was shot in French’s hometown, features Slick Rick and Cam’ron, two hip-hop style icons.
How did Drake hop on the track? He met up with his frequent collaborator in Miami while he was working on Scorpion, and reveals that Drizzy really enjoyed the energy of the track and wanted to be part of it.
“[Drake] heard “No Stylist” and fell in love with it, and he was like ‘this is the one you and me should come out with,'” the Bad Boy MC revealed. “…It was just the energy, you know. Some people make music, but you could tell they’re not friends. We make music, and me and him kind of like the same things in life, you know what I’m saying? We from the same era, so it just came together.”
