Future is officially off the lean. In a new interview with Genius, Future admitted that he has been lean-free for sometime now, but he was nervous to announce it to his fans for one particular reason.
“I didn’t wanna tell nobody I stopped drinking lean,” Hendrix told Rob Markman. “I didn’t tell… Because I felt like, then they gon’ be like ‘Oh, his music changed because he stopped drinking lean. Oh, I can hear it when he changes…’ It just be hard when your fans so used to a certain persona, you be afraid to change.”
As the rapper mentioned, his music has been heavily tied to his lean consumption throughout the years. Songs like 2017’s “Mask Off” have romanticized his drug intake. Fans and music critics have also credited Future’s music to promoting the new wave of “drug music” in the hip-hop community.
Future is gearing up to drop his newest project, The WZRD on Jan. 18. It will be interesting to see if his music takes a shift in focus as he steers clear of his drug of choice.
