We can find in love in a hopeless place, or we can turn cupid into one tainted fellow. The latter is seen in the hilarious visuals for BJ The Chicago Kid’s latest video “The New Cupid.”
The R&B crooner’s single stems from his debut album, In My Mind and features comedian Hanibal Buress as a petty cupid who pays a woman to tempt a good guy (played by IAMSU) into cheating on his girlfriend. Mila J makes a cameo before BJ meets with Kendrick Lamar, who drops his verse.
Whatever Cupid’s quarrel is, he seems adamant in inflicting pain rather than love, a role Buress was thrilled to play. Speaking to Rolling Stone, the funnyman explains he was the key element for the video. “BJ was telling how the video was missing one piece, said. “It was me. I came into the picture and made this project whole. The cherry on top. The final stroke of the paintbrush on a masterpiece.”
Of course, the comedian was awarded handsomely for his performance.
“A lot of people have been asking about my compensation for this project,” he said. “BJ paid me in a lifetime subscription to Tidal and three ghostwritten 13-bar verses about any subject matter of my choosing. Stay blessed.”
