Not only has Ice Cube inspired a generation of artists with his music, but he’s also brought us numerous unforgettable films with underlying themes that the people can relate to. The NWA lyricist and film maker sat down with fellow West Coast veteran Snoop Dogg on GGN to rap about his landmark music and what inspires his blockbuster films.
Snoop Dogg kicks things off by talking about Cube’s most iconic record “True To The Game” off his second solo album Death Certificate. The South Central L.A. native reflects on the “young ferocious Cube” and explains why the song will always be special to him.
“That record is always gonna have a place,” said Cube. “It’ll always be a reminder to people to check yourself sometimes. We’re all guilty of it. I’m gonna say that I’m guilty of it sometimes too. Every pencil needs to be sharpened now and again.”

In between puffs of Mary Jane, the topic of discussion eventually shifts to Cube’s outstanding career in film. At the 12:00 minute mark, the Friday creator details his upcoming third installment of Barbershop. Although it may be the last film in the franchise, Cube says that he was inspired to include and address the real-life violence that afflicts troubled youths and their families every day.
“It’s a great story about what’s really going on in Chicago out there,” Cube told Uncle Snoop. “There’s a lot of killing going on and we’re dealing with it because they deal with it in real barbershops. So we gotta deal with the real.”
Snoop also speaks with Ice Cube about his superb understanding of his targeted demographic and how he balances between his comedy, action, and family-based films. The West Coast OG’s also talk about Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson Jr, and his rise to fame after his role in Straight Outta Compton.
