Steering right around the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, Ice Cube is bringing up the Hollywood film scene for another reason. The Straight Outta Compton producer says he’s ready to elevate Hollywood into a “cool” status by running his own studio.
Hollywood may not be full of drab people, but Ice Cube makes a point to say that “cool people have a hard time showing what they got in Hollywood. And I’ve been fighting my whole career to show a different side. But there’s not enough Ice Cubes out there. There’s not enough Ice Cubes getting a chance to do their thing.”
There’s no dispute there. Ice Cube has been starring, directing, and producing a series of flicks for the last decade, including movies like the Friday franchise, Barbershop, and his latest highly-acclaimed work with N.W.A member Dr. Dre, Straight Outta Compton.
Since the industry won’t give the cool people a chance, Cube is prepared to do it himself. “I’m ready to green light movies, and be in it to win it,” he said in an interview with Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film & TV, The Hollywood Reporter states.
This is all good in theory, but there is a question of where he’ll get the funds to create such a studio on this large of a scale. However he gets the capital though, it won’t be through fundraising. “Then what you’re doing is fighting with your money to get back into the industry, or for them to use your money instead of their own. So, you got to figure out how to do it within the flow of the industry,” he said.
For right now, Ice Cube is busy working on Barbershop 3 and hopefully another Friday sequel. But it’ll be interesting to see if he can take Cube Vision to the next level.
