We all thought we saw the last of “Hollywood Squares” when the final episode aired in 2004, but now Ice Cube plans revamp the game show with an urban twist. The Barbershop 3 actor recently announced that he plans to bring back the revered celebrity game show and turn it into “Hip Hop Squares” for VH1. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cube is set to revive the long-running series, which made its debut on NBC in 1965, to test celebrities knowledge of primarily hip-hop and pop culture.
“Hip Hop Squares is going to be fun and spontaneous; unlike typical game shows, viewers should never know what’s going to happen next,” Ice Cube said. “When VH1 asked us to join the producing team, we jumped aboard as we have had success with VH1, and we love their team, excitement and commitment to the show.”
Cube’s version may be slightly different from MTV2’s “Hip Hop Squares,” which was hosted by Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg in 2012. The series will join other highly anticipated programs on VH1 including their original series “The Breaks,” Marc Lamont Hill’s new late-night gig VH1 Live! and “The Amber Rose Show.” Which of your favorite rappers would you want to see in “Hip Hop Squares?”
