Ice Cube hit up Jimmy Kimmel Live last night (Oct. 20) to discuss the upcoming highly-anticipated N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. Sharing his experience on set and how he prepared his son for the starring role, Cube made a point to assert that even Ice Cube Jr. had to audition for his part.
“Hell yeah. He had to win the part. I ain’t givin’ up nothing free,” he said of his son. “He’s spot-on. He was born to play the part.”
Giving props to the film’s director F. Gary Gray, with whom he worked on Friday, Cube also praised the young cast for doing a “hell of a job” bringing the group’s classic West Coast legacy back to life. He also talked working with Dr. Dre, having Eazy-E’s children on set while shooting, and consulting others that were involved.
“We had everybody that was around at that time, back on the set, giving their two cents,” he said. “Everybody was either mad they wasn’t in the movie enough, or mad they was in the movie too much.”
As an added bonus to his Kimmel appearance, Ice Cube also played another round of “Ice Cube Says Nice Things Angrily,” where he hilariously puts his signature aggressive spin on friendly phrases. Peep the clip below:
