ILOVEMAKONNEN has confirmed he’s no longer part of Drake’s OVO Sound label, a fate many saw coming for some time. During an interview with Fader last year, when asked about his relationship with the label, the 26 year old’s response prompted many to think there was troubled waters between the two.
It’s cool,” he said. “They put out my music and stuff and we just keep it moving. Let them tell you their relationship with Makonnen. I’m just an artist, being an artist, and there’s only so much that I can do.”
Rumors later died down when MAKONNEN revealed an OVO compilation album was in the works, however, after releasing his last project Drink More Water 6 solely on Warner Bros. Records, The “I Only Trip With U” artist, who inked his deal in 2014, officially cut ties with Drake’s team.
In a statement to XXL, MAKONNEN detailed his split from the Toronto based label but not without thanking everyone first.
“I cannot thank OVO, 40, Oliver, Future & Mr. Morgan, enough for all that they have done for my career. No words can express how much I appreciate Drake for being a part of the success of Tuesday. I’m sure the haters will have something negative to say, but all in all my choice to be solely on Warner Bros. Records was the right thing for me and for my best interest. Sorry there’s no beef to report, DRINK MORE WATER.”
