The Estate of James Yancy has revealed they plan to release J Dilla’s final vocal album The Diary. Rolling Stone reports that Dilla’s family has revived his infamous PayJay imprint in order to release the long lost album with the help of Mass Appeal Records.
Although it was supposed to drop in 2002, The Diary will hold the final batch of unreleased music that J Dilla created while he was alive. According to a press release from Mass Appeal, the album is said to lend a “crucial insight into the producer’s prowess and thought process in the period leading up to his break with the major label system.”
Now, shortly after his 42nd birthday and the 10th anniversary of his untimely death, Jay Dee’s final masterpiece will hit the shelves and music streaming platforms across the ‘Net.
The Diary, which encompassed the making of genuine classics like Ruff Draft and Donuts, is set to feature Snoop Dogg, Bilal, Kokane, Frank and Dank, and Boogie, with production by Dilla, Madlib, Pete Rock, Hi-tek, Nottz, House Shoes, Supa Dave West, Bink! and Karriem Riggins.
The announcement regarding the album’s release was made earlier today in an interview with Nas on Zane Lowe’s show on Beats1. Nasir also ushered in the worldwide debut the first, never-before-heard song off the album called “The Introduction.”
The Diary is set to drop Apr. 15. Listen to “The Introduction” and check out the tracklist below.
