It has only been a year since his sleeper gem SYRE: The Electric Album popped up in earbuds, but Jaden Smith has opted to release new heat to celebrate its first anniversary. Enter his freshly dropped project, The Sunset Tapes: A Cool Tape Story.
Upon first look at the tracklist, the project doesn’t appear to feature any artists aside from the outspoken creative himself, giving him the freedom to fully command all 11 tracks.
Before formally sharing the project (Smith has yet to clarify whether or not The Sunset Tapes should be considered a full album, an EP, a mixtape, or simply remain ambiguously considered a project), the rapper opened up about its abstract inspiration during an interview with Beats 1 Radio.
“The Sunset Tapes are really important to me because I’m obsessed with the sunset, and I need to watch the sunset every single day,” he said at the time. “I feel like it restarts my whole life when I watch the sunset.”
“It’s like I’m watching the world start over,” he continued, “and I just need the sunset for some reason, and it has this weird connection with relationships and love almost because it’s like the sun sets, and then you’re like, ‘What do I do? Who am I gonna spend time with?’ It’s dark now. It’s almost like programmed into humans where it’s like, alright, it’s dark. I need to find shelter. I need to find loved ones and food.”
