Janelle Monae and her newly minted Wondaland Records crew are gearing up to make an indelible mark on 2015. She already introduced the world to Jidenna, the worldly melodic MC responsible for “Classic Man.” He and Monae stopped by Hot 97 to explain to Ebro and Laura Stylez exactly how they plan to communicate with the world through their art.
“We’re in a great season where in music, people want to feel something new,” Monae said. “Wondaland is not just a recording label, it’s a movement. We started from the bottom up just like people working at a fast food restaurant. People didn’t believe in our dreams. We had dreams and aspirations of putting out the music we wanted to do… We understand what it means to be a minority living in America. We have the same issues as everybody else, we just choose to use music and our creativity to help free people, to help give people a load off when they’re dealing with police brutality, as a woman dealing with sexuality. We have the same issues.”
