Dilla Weekend 2016 made a lasting imprint on hip-hop’s most talented artists and fans alike. Over the weekend, loyal followers of the late producer J. Dilla flocked to SoHo Studios at the Wynwood Art District in Miami to witness legendary artists who have been influenced by his work.
Veterans like DJ Premier and budding rap stars like The Breaks‘ own A.F.R.O paid homage to Dilla with stellar performances that would make the Detroit native proud.
“The excitement was just general,” said Dilla’s mother Ma Dukes. “It was something– it was like a new ‘Rock The Bells’ kind of thing that was going on and we didn’t expect it to be with that type of power. But we knew the love was there like that.”
At the end of Day 1, Ma Dukes gave out her first-ever Imhotep Master Builder award to the OG Pete Rock.
The three-day event included performances from Rosewood 2055, Noex, Royce Da 5’9, Kid Vishis, Rapsody, Bun B, Slum Village, A.G., Diamond D, Jay Electronica, Black Thought, and DJ Premier. 9th Wonder, DJ Heron, Kev Brown and other skilled producers blessed the crowd with dope scratches and mixes in between sets.
