Music’s First Couple switching up their regimen to an all plant-based everything diet was no random coincidence. Jay Z and Beyonce first announced their 22-day vegan challenge on Hov’s 44th birthday last week and the man responsible for it is the rapper’s vegan coach Marco Borges, a.k.a. “my friend Marco.” Here, Cosmopolitan.com got a hold of the power couple’s cuisine culprit and got the skinny on their new routine.
What prompted Jay Z and Beyoncé to try a plant-based diet?
Jay and I were having a conversation a few months back, and I challenged him to adopt a plant-based breakfast. He said, “I could do that. I think that would be easy.” He did, and it was even easier than he thought. A few weeks back, he called: “You know, I’d love to try to go vegan. My 44th birthday’s coming up, and there’s just something about it that feels right to me.” He said, “I want to do it the day before my birthday, so that on my birthday I’m eating this way, and I want to do it for 22 days.”
In order to get to forever, you’ve got to get through 22 days, right? Psychologists discovered it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. When you tell someone, “You can’t eat meat again,” guess what happens? They fail. So, “Just try it for three weeks. It’s less than a month. It’s not difficult.” Subconsciously, you’re setting them up for success.
How’s it going for Jay Z and Beyonce?
They feel great. Energy levels, everything. They love it! It’s been easier than either could have imagined. I don’t know what they expected, if they thought they’d be eating grass all day. [Laughs] We’ve cooked some delicious meals here at home — home meaning the hotel in LA. I imagine most people think they have 10 chefs cooking 15 different unbelievable vegan meals at all hours. But, the truth is, we’ve made do with what we have in our surroundings.
Was there apprehension going in?
Had I pushed this on them, there might have been. But they brought it up. There hasn’t been one moment where they’re like, “I can’t wait for this to be over” or “As soon as this is over, I’m eating a steak.”
Do Jay or B have a favorite fruit or vegetable?
Brussels sprouts have been a hit.
Have they mentioned any desire or lack thereof to share their plant-based diet with Blue Ivy?
Blue Ivy’s off limits. Sorry!
