While Kanye West grabbed most of the headlines for his disruption of Taylor Swift’s award acceptance at last week’s VMAs, Lil Mama received significantly less backlash for her unplanned appearance during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ closing performance.
Jay finally addressed the incident yesterday (September 24) while speaking with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, saying the stage crashing during their first-ever live performance of “Empire State of Mind” was in bad taste.
“I would never do that. I would never have the nerve to do that,” Jay told Angie. “We worked for weeks… we went to rehearsals, we did run-throughs, and we worked really hard on the performance to put on a show for people. To interrupt that moment for us, I don’t think that was the right thing to do.
“I actually think its the equivalent to what Kanye did to Taylor Swift, but nobody really talked about that because I’m not little sweet girl from the middle of America,” he continued. “I’m cool with her being excited and all that, I’m just saying that you have to understand people put in work to make that performance happen… if you look at those screens, we had to go to Yankees stadium, shot that live… to disrupt that was a little out of line.”
Disrespected, sure, but was Jay really mad?
“Yea, I was a little angry to be honest. But you know? What am I gonna do? Fight Lil Mama? Have a tussle with her?”
