The 2019 Grammys should be very interesting to say the least.
According to a new report from Rap-Up, a commercial that aired on CBS on Tuesday (Feb. 5) announced that Jennifer Lopez was leading a tribute to Motown in honor of the label’s 60th anniversary. The Recording Academy has not confirmed the reports on its official website, but fans are already very confused and sharing their reactions on social media.
For those who need a quick history lesson, Motown is a legendary record label responsible for housing some of the most iconic artists in the industry, including The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and The Jackson 5. That being so, many fans are confused why J.Lo was selected to lead the tribute instead of the handful of living black artists.
“I have questions,” Jemele Hill tweeted in response to Rap-Up’s report. “Put the #GRAMMYs right in the trash with the #SuperBowl who thought it was a good idea for @JLo to do a Motown tribute,” another person tweeted.
Lopez has never won a Grammy, but she has been nominated twice, once in 2000 for her dance record “Waiting for Tonight,” and again in 2001 for “Let’s Get Loud.”
Other performers during music’s biggest night will include: Diana Ross, Travis Scott, Cardi B, Post Malone, Janelle Monáe, and H.E.R. The 61st Grammys will air on Feb. 10, at 8p.m. on CBS.
