Following the court ruling in favor of Marvin Gaye’s estate against Robin Thicke and Pharrell’s hit “Blurred Lines,” another totally different song is coming into question. This time from the side of Jermaine Dupri.
The highly awarded producer sat down for an interview with the Associated Press and shared his thoughts on the aforementioned “Blurred Lines” case, to which he said, “Them going to court was really more shocking than anything.” But, he can relate to both parties given the musical nature of being influenced by older classics. However, Dupri’s situation is a little bit different.
“Ciara’s new single is a complete rip-off of Usher’s ‘U Got It Bad,'” he said. “I’m clear on what I made and I’m clear on how music influences people and I’m clear on chord changes and how people move things…It might not be as evident as the ‘Blurred Lines’ situation, but I believe the same thing happened to me.”
Dupri plans to contact the producers behind Ciara’s melody, and wants Usher, Cox and himself to receive the proper credits.
