It’s been nearly a decade since Jhené Aiko graced the SOBs stage, dating back to her teeny R&B bopper days as an opening act for ex-boy band B2K.
Last Friday (Oct. 19), the petite soulstress performed to a sold out crowd at the intimate New York venue. She also performed at the Fader Fort/Converse show earlier that day. With Roc Nation’s Bridget Kelly delivering an impressive set prior, the anticipation was high by the time Ms. Aiko touched the mic. Her 2011 Sailing Souls mixtape garnered a legion of loyal fans who filled the space just to catch a glimpse of the singer. Jhené performed barefoot in a flowy pink skirt and a midriff-baring top, but to keep it G she toted a clear plastic cup of Henny in one hand and a mug of tea in the other.
In addition to her hits including “My Mine” and her single “3:16 A.M.,” Aiko also sang a live rendition of Tupac’s “Keep Ya Head Up,” a staple in her live shows. But being one to please her diehards, Aiko premiered a new song off her debut album Souled Out due 2013 called “What A Life.” Watch her perform the fresh track and explain its meaning below.
