Jill Scott is celebrating her 15 year anniversary since the release of her debut platinum album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1. Her first album was a timeless piece that glows on the shelf of her own repertoire. Singles such as “A Long Walk” and “The Way” are still emblematic for the R&B and Neo-Soul genre today. Luckily for us, there has been confirmation of an album with Atlantic, set to release sometime later this year.
In an interview with Billboard, Scott claims the album is “closer than it’s ever been. But I don’t think my gut is finished. I haven’t emptied everything out. This is my baby, you know, and it takes me some time to relinquish the reins. I might come up with another song or two. I don’t know.” Jill’s last album, The Light of the Sun (2011), was her first album to hit number 1 on the Billboard 200. Needless to say, the pedestal for the next release is still lingering in the sky for many of us.
Besides working on her the highly-anticipated album, Jill has had a full schedule within the past months. January was the release for her Lifetime film With This Ring, and she just recently headlined a few shows. On Feb. 10, she was a star in the line-up for the CBS/Grammy tribute concert to Stevie Wonder, where she performed with other greats such as India.Arie and Janelle Monae. Last week, Jilly from Philly was honored herself at the annual Black Women in Music salute hosted by Essence.
The grandiose event took place at the Avalon in Hollywood, where Scott was honored with performances by Chaka Khan, Brandy, Lianne La Havas and MC Lyte. Among the music celebs in the house were Grammy Award winner Lalah Hathaway, Ciara, Grammy nominees Ledisiand Antonique Smith, Empire up-and-comer V. Bozeman, Goapele, Marsha Ambrosius, Zendaya and Jordin Sparks.
