Tekashi 6ix9ine raised some eyebrows after he boldly dubbed himself the “King of New York” earlier this year. While some were ready to debate the self-proclaimed title with the controversial artist, an unexpected hip-hop veteran said Tekashi’s declaration has some merit behind it. Jim Jones stopped by Power 106FM radio show, where he confirmed that Tekashi may just be the king of the city in this new era of hip-hop.
“I mean, I guess man,” he said when asked about Tekashi’s title. “It’s a different era of music. It’s the Instagram era, Internet era. The kings I grew up with was really in the street, like you were really in the street.. We didn’t have phones to take pictures. It was really action out there. I went up against a lot of kings of New York. You state your claim if you come from New York. ”
He also explained that Tekashi’s claim to the throne is based off of a different metric system. “He’s more or less coming from a place of all the hits that he has done this year and being from New York. He’s been the most successful artist from New York… That’s righteous to say I guess,” he continued. “I claimed the king at that time… 50 claimed the king. Jay claimed the king, Nas claimed the king. Puffy claimed the king. So there’s a lot of kings that come out [of New York].”
Tekashi 6ix9ine may be the king of New York at the moment, but he could soon be booted from his seat. The rapper is reportedly mixed up in a legal battle regarding a Feb. 2015 incident, in which he had sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl. The rapper pleaded guilty to the charge and could be facing prison time as well as be registered as a sex offender.
