Kanye West stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the first time since their infamous fake feud in 2013. During his Thursday (Aug. 9) interview, the outspoken mogul held nothing back. He discussed everything from suicidal thoughts and what he wants engraved on his tombstone, to his daughter North’s time at fashion camp.
Of course, he talked a bit about his most recent studio-album, Ye. He divulged that it was therapeutic to dig for beats and samples for the LP, especially after his release from the hospital in 2016. He notes that it reminded him of what he loves most about music, and took him back to his early music-making days at his mother Donda’s house in Chicago.
While he was particularly stumped after Kimmel brought up his “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” comment in reference to Trump, there were otherwise no dull moments during the interview, thanks to some memorable quotes and explanations. Here are some of our favorites.

“When you go on new creative journeys, it is exciting for people to appreciate that, especially if people didn’t think it was possible” – on his Yeezy brand being as important as his music
“If I’m afraid to be me, I’m not longer ‘Ye, that’s what makes ‘Ye, and I actually quite enjoy when people are mad at me about certain things”– on finding his confidence to speak up and say he likes Donald Trump
“They keep us so focused on history that we start to believe that it actually repeats itself…we can’t advance as a race of beings…sometimes, you have to be fearless enough to break the f**king simulation” – on forward-thinking concepts and ideas
“Nah, I still look at Pornhub” – on if his attitudes towards women have changed since having daughters
“We want to put a patina on it, and not face it. I think the breakthrough of that album…is to have a song called “I Thought About Killing You” in this super-PC, Hollywood, you-can’t-say-nothin’-wrong day and age” – on the creation of the intro song off his album Ye.
“The funny thing is…it drives more of how you really feel. I think it’s important for us to have open conversations about mental health, especially with me being black…there’s some cases of Bi-polar disorder where some people go low, I got high…like Michelle Obama said!”– on his Bi-polar disorder
“I’m 41 years old, and I don’t know anyone that f**ked up as much as I have, that’s still as successful” – on how being outspoken has its perks
