In 2012, Kendrick Lamar brought the music industry to its knees with the praise-worthy debut of his sophomore studio album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city. The 12-track soundscape catapults listeners onto a rocky journey through the eyes of a young black man living in Compton, Calif. From triumphs to loss, Lamar’s musical effort painted a graphic picture lyrically. Now, a visual component of the critically-acclaimed project has arrived on the Internet.
Directed by Kahlil Joseph, the 14-minute virtual journey through Compton is backed by the captivating sounds of the aforementioned album. It also features additional statements before the songs’ transitions.
The reel debuted at Los Angeles’ famed Sundance NEXT Festival a year ago, but until today those unlucky fans who missed out turned their fortune around by feasting their eyes on the short film.
Kendrick has also been in the news recently for his Grammy Awards wins, taking home five gramophones that stem from his To Pimp A Butterfly album. According to TDE president Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, Kendrick alongside Jay Rock, SZA, Ab-Soul, Isaiah Rashad, and Schoolboy Q are slated to release projects this year.
