Kenneth Whalum is one of the quiet beasts in the music game. He’s put in work with Jay Z (American Gangsta), Maxwell (BLACKsummers’night), John Legend, among others.
This week, the potent crooner linked with Meridian, Miss., native Big K.R.I.T., for the passionate and sadly honest, “Might Not Be Ok.”
Over teary-eyed piano keys and synths, K.R.I.T. waxes angrily about the senseless police brutality against Blacks. K.R.I.T. also details how police violence and prejudices begets paranoia in minds of Blacks and police.
This song will stir feelings of anger and profound sadness. It’s a stark reminder that when most cops see Black men and women, they see profound hopelessness as well as threatening, ignorant and suspicious individuals. It’s also a surreal reminder that racism and discrimination isn’t going anywhere.
