The Late Show With Stephen Colbert‘s guest on Tuesday night (Jan. 5), was none other than Killer Mike. The ATLien had an insightful talk with the show’s host where he tackled issues from race in America to the presidential campaign.
On the topic of one presidential hopeful, Bernie Sanders, Mike said he’s the only candidate who practices the philosophies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in terms of his involvement with the poor people’s campaign. “Bernie Sanders is the only politician who has consistently for 50 years taken that social justice platform into politics,” he said. “Right now we have the opportunity to elect someone who is directly out of the philosophy of King-ian non-violence. We can elect someone who cares about poor people, cares about women, gay and black rights, cares about lives that don’t look like his.”
Colbert also asked Mike if he thinks there’s a “systemic attempt” that keeps disadvantaged minorities in poor conditions, Mike pointed to the example of ex-Chicago mayor, Richard Daley. “It’s not an attempt at all, it’s successful,” he said. “If you look at Daley and the highways in Chicago, he built the highways to segregate people.”
