Lauryn Hill is being sued by her landlord for not paying rent.
Hill, 37, has been renting a South Orange, New Jersey mansion since 2009, but stopped paying rent last month. Her landlord is now suing her for eviction, which means Hill has not paid her rent or refuses to move after being evicted. However, it doesn’t look like her landlord will be getting his money anytime soon.
The “Ex-Factor” singer is about to be sentenced for her tax evasion charges. In 2012, Hill pleaded guilty for failing to file tax returns on $1.8 million in income between 2005 and 2007 — a federal crime. Her sentencing is April 22, and she faces a maximum of one year in prison and $100,000 in fines for each count.
Hill filed a response to her charges saying “she withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family.” Prior to that she attempted to explain her disinvolvement from society in a tumblr post. “Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual,” she wrote last June. “I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival.”
Hill has only released one solo studio album in her music career. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released in 1998, has sold almost 20 million copies and earned Hill five Grammys, including the coveted Album of the Year. Fans continue to wait for its follow-up.
