Though HIll did not speak during the hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo criticized herfor failing to pay her back taxes and for relying on the promise of a recording contract with Sony to pay her fees. The contract is reportedly worth over $1 million.
“This is not someone who stands before the court penniless,” Arleo said to Hill’s attorney, Nathan Hochman. “This is a criminal matter. Actions speak louder than words, and there has been no effort here to pay these taxes.”
Last year, Hill plead guilty to not paying federal taxes on $1.8 million earned from 2005 to 2007. She was ordered to pay back her debt by the time of her sentencing. However, the total amount Hill owes is in dispute by her lawyer..
“I fully expect that by May 3 Ms. Hill will be able to pay back all the restitution she has,” Hochman said.
Hill remains free until her next court date.
