In the case of Lil Mama’s latest effort, “Sausage,” Internet critics either love it or hate it.
Inspired by a chant made popular on Vine, the track also includes interpolations of Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen,” Big Sean’s “IDFWU,” Chedda Da Connect’s “Flicka Da Wrist,” Mary J. Blige’s “Seven Days,” Atown’s “Good Morning To You,” among a host of other influences. Backed by Slick Rick’s “Mona Lisa” beat, the Brooklyn rapstress weaves in and out of familiar references while incorporating her own animated flow. All of this is then topped with intricate dance moves and a healthy number of costume changes.
Whether you plan on taking “Sausage” in stride or not, Lil Mama has garnered the praise of two celebrated femcees: MC Lyte and Missy Elliott. Undoubtedly paying homage to both ladies, it seems they appreciate the song and video.
