Lil Wayne is facing up to a decade in prison for allegedly possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The U.S. District Attorney in the Southern District of Florida charged Tunechi, whose birth name is Dwayne Michael Carter, with a felony count of weapons possession on Tuesday (Nov. 17).
The 38-year-old rapper stands accused of carrying a gun during a holiday flight on a private plane in December 2019. The Nola native “knowingly possessed a firearm and ammunition in and affecting interstate and foreign commerce, knowing that he had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year,” prosecutors allege in court documents obtained by Variety.
Wayne admitted to owning the gold-plated pistol after it was found in his luggage, the Miami Herald reports.
In 2007, the Grammy winner was arrested after NYPD officers found a gun on his tour bus. Wayne pleaded guilty to the gun charge and served a year behind bars.
He is expected to appear in court next month for the federal weapons charge.
