Jimmy Fallon tapped into some real gold with the lip syncing segments of his talk show, so much so that soon there’ll be an hour long slot on your TV lineup dedicated to dramatically mouthing quality jams.
According to Deadline, the Tonight Show host, Stephen Merchant and John Krasinski have teamed up to executive produce Lip Sync Battle for Spike TV, with rapper/actor/businessman LL Cool J tapped as the host. The premise of the show is simple: celebs will battle it out by lip syncing the song of their choice. What’s the grand prize? Simply bragging rights. The first of 10 taped episodes—all shot in New York City—will air on April 2.
“Like the rest of the world, I’m a big fan spiketvof these battles, but this show is going to bring it to a whole new level,” LL said. “I’m thrilled to be working with Jimmy Fallon, John Krasinski, Stephen Merchant, and the entire team to host the show and can’t wait for the fans at home to join in!!”
There are plenty more producers on the lighthearted show besides LL, Fallon, Merchant and Krasinski. Also on the squad are Rick Schwartz of Fallon’s Eight Million Plus, Jay Peterson of Matador, and Casey Patterson, the EVP, Talent Development and Production, Viacom Entertainment Group. Beth McCarthy-Miller of SNL will direct the show.
In addition to Fallon’s show, RuPaul’s Drag Race has also successfully (and hilariously) incorporated lip syncing in the past. If the new show is anything like Emma Stone’s epic battle against Fallon on The Tonight Show last spring, Lip Sync Battle should be good. Check it out below.
