I’m honored. I’m really blessed. When it’s all said and done I’m part of history. When it comes to young people, we are the only outlet. If you dropping an album or a book you are coming to 106. If you just got out of jail or want to clear the air you are coming to our show. We are the first to play Soulja Boy when I see him now I take great pride. We broke him. I’m excited to be part of that wheel.
There’s been a lot of interest surrounding the relationship between you and your co-host Rocsi. Where do you two stand now?
I can honestly R is one of my best friends; one of my three best friends. We came in together so all of the things we’ve experience, there is no one who can relate to them like she can. From having a bad interview day to tripping on set, no one understands. That connection is deep. We’ve watched and helped each other through all our relationships. We’ve seen each other in love or during hard times. I’m there to cover her on air. Our chemistry is deep. I don’t care what anyone has to say about her I’ll defend her til the day I die.
The music industry has gone through some changes since you started at 106. How have you adjusted to the new climate?
It’s totally change since when I started. When is started MySpace was big you still had to buy CDs. Now, no one is buying CDs. All these blogs—YBF, Necole Bitchie—are breaking news. It’s an even bigger change for artists. Twitter keeps people relevant. Illegal downloading is the norm. However, I do believe that If your product is good people will buy it. It’s about creating a quality project for your audience to digest.
What’s the future looking for Terrence J?
Stomp the Yard 2 comes out September 21. My next film after thatis “Burlesque” starring Cher, Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci and Christian Bell. That movie comes out Thanksgiving Day. I play Cher’s sound man/assistant. It’s big budget movie. Christina kills it. My other projects include, Kourtney & Khloe take Miami season 2 on E! which is airing Sundays at 10pm. We have 106 & Park radio. I just signed a huge deal with Coogi. I’ll be ambassador for Coogi footwear.
Wow, you have a lot of irons in the fire. How do you manage it all?
Fred Whitaker is my brother and manager. I’m repped by William Morris and I have a big management announcement coming soon. We have a production company and we have three shows in production now. We are always looking for talent and show ideas. My company is called Jenkins Entertainment Group. BET has been very accommodating; they gave me the time off to do both the movie and the reality show.
Can’t let you go without asking this for the ladies: Are you single, dating…
I’m working. [Laughs]
