M.I.A. must have been looking for a war with the BeyHive and the Navy. The AIM artist made a bold move by blasting Beyonce during an interview with Attitude UK magazine, where she accused Bey of “stealing” her music.
In the interview, the Sri Lankan artist also called out Rihanna and Madonna for jocking her style. “I’m fine with Madonna or Beyoncé or Rihanna being ‘inspired’ by my work, but I would like them to then go, ‘Yeah, this immigrant who came out of nowhere influenced us, so maybe not all of them are f**king terrible,'” M.I.A. told the publication. “They don’t even think like that. They go ‘Yeah, maybe me stealing the stuff says she’s all right. She should be thankful we’re stealing it.’”
The artist also noted the stealing only becomes a problem when she realizes she has mouths to feed as well. “But sometimes you just think, ‘F**k, I have to pay some bills,’ you know?” M.I.A. also commented on Beyonce’s route to fame at a young age. “Beyoncé comes from the school of Michael Jackson-ness. Where the family built an entire world to support you. From when you were a child. I never had that luxury,” she added.
As expected, the BeyHive swooped right in to defend Beyonce’s honor, calling M.I.A. out for her comments, and suggesting she should work harder if she wanted to reach Beyonce’s level. The “Bad Girls” artist quickly took to Twitter to clap back on Nov. 16. “Industry offended I offended Beyonce , then spent 6 months telling me they can’t market brown,” she tweeted.
M.I.A. has previously collaborated with hot names in the rap game including T.I., Lil Wayne, and Beyonce’s husband Jay Z on the 2008 single, “Swagger Like Us.” After these comments, it’s likely she’ll be getting her invite to the family barbecue revoked forever.
