With Spotify’s Single series entering its second year of life, the popular creation has garnered more than a billion streams at one point in time. Now the streaming service is adding Mac Miller to the list of popular artists included in the showcase.
Released November 28, the music website features two songs, “Dunno” from his last project Swimming, as well as “Nothing From Nothing,” a cover from Billy Preston’s 1974 album The Kids & Me. Recorded shortly before the rapper’s death, each performance is a stripped-down rendition of the songs. Replacing Preston’s upbeat track centered around heavy horns and fast-paced percussion, Miller delivers a piano-based interpretation of the classic. Much like the vintage cover, the “Dang!” MC frees his original anthem from its beat by playing up the key instrumental.
Passing away from an accidental overdose in September, the late musician has had an outpouring of support since his death. Most recently, the 26-year-old’s friends came together to pay tribute to his life in concert. Though the tragic loss has left several parts of the music industry in tethers, his untimely death has opened up a new narrative about how the hip-hop industry discusses drug use.
