Mac Miller will forever live on in the hearts of everybody he’s touched. Since news of his death spread on Friday (Sept. 7), fans have instinctively gathered at Frick Park’s blue slide playground– the playground that inspired Miller’s debut studio album Blue Slide Park– to honor the late rapper.
Now, Pittsburgh record label Nightfall Records have organized an official vigil service at the symbolic site. Taking place on Tuesday, Sept. 11, the company invites the city of Pittsburgh to come together for the “legendary icon.”
“Mac deserves to be sent off with an evening of celebrating his life, discussing his struggles, and remembering his stories; most importantly for his iconic work that brought joy into the lives of everybody who listened,” the label posted on the official Facebook event page. “We invite all artists to come and paint, create, draw, live tribute art for this event.”
Mac Miller’s down-to-earth persona is just one of the reasons his tragic death rocked so many people. In 2011, months before the release of Blue Slide Park, Miller spoke to MTV to shed some light on the meaning behind the album title. “Blue Slide Park is a park in Pittsburgh we grew up at,” he told MTV News. “No matter what happens in life, no matter where you go, where you’re off to, what happens with the park, that slide will always be blue. That will always be Blue Slide Park no matter what.”
Blue Slide Playground is located in Squirrel Hill on Beechwood Blvd. The vigil will begin at 5 p.m.
