Mario is gearing up for the release of his forthcoming album, Dancing Shadows, which will feature his latest single “Drowning.” The mellow melody puts into perspective the thin line between love and lust and its visual component displays that inner turmoil.
“This song is about being faced with the reality of having multiple women I love for different reasons,” he said in a statement. “One is based on infatuation and lust, and the other is a lingering love connection that has not yet ended. As a man, I’m finding myself drowning in the middle one’s tears and the flow of sexual attraction to the other. As I share a story about highs, lows, and the grey space in between love and lust, fans can expect to feel reconnected to me.”
Since 2009’s D.N.A., Mario has remained away from the musical soundscape in terms of a full-length album. Now, the Baltimore native is ready to further solidify his imprint in the R&B realm.
In a 2016 interview with VIBE, the “Let Me Love You” singer shared how he feels R&B singers have to rely on more than their voice to afford them continued success. “At this day and age, you’ve got to be more interesting than just a R&B artist. Or else you’ll just be the guy that people say ‘oh I love the music, he’s dope,'” he said. “But what else? I’m more than just an R&B artist. I’m an actor, I’m a creator, I’m a writer, I’m an author, I’m a director, I’m a visionary. So these are things that I’ve decided that I’m okay with sharing this, I’m okay with being this person. Taking time off allowed me to tap into that side of myself.”
