When Beyonce’s video for “Formation” dropped, it caused a major socio-political debate over her audacious way of visually claiming and owning her blackness. Yet self-identity wasn’t the only thing Bey inspired; she also led the way for a class of seventh graders in Louisiana to perfect their math skills.
A new viral video has surfaced online featuring a seventh grade math class in New Orleans performing a math infused remix of “Formation.” The lyrics to the revamped song incorporate mathematical terms and concepts used for determining the circumference of a circle. The song was created by Ciera Paul, their teacher at ReNEW Cultural Arts Academy.
Some of the lyrics include: “I’m crazy with my circular measurements / Pi times diameter gives me the circumference,” and “Complimentary is 90 degree angles/ Supplementary equals 1-8-0/I solved the problem like I’m a superhero.”
Their rendition also includes some slight dance moves like the Dab and the Milly Rock. And in the midst of the performance, there is also an interlude of some lyrics in Spanish: “Estoy tan loco con mis medidas circulares / Pi multiplican diametro me da la circumferencia.”
Ms. Paul took to her Facebook page to share the video. In the post, she wrote, “My students love to make beats and dance so I decided to teach them Geometry with a song. Of course my girls love Beyonce so I knew they would be on board. I was excited to see that my boys were just as invested. They can find the circumference and area of any circle”
