The Estate of the late King Of Pop Michael Jackson is partnering with IMAX to release and remaster his iconic short film, “Thriller.”
It was announced on Aug. 29 (what would have been Jackson’s 60th birthday) that “Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D” will be digitally remastered into IMAX 3D. It will be released in U.S. IMAX theaters for one week beginning Sept. 21. “Thriller” will play before the upcoming film The House With a Clock in Its Walls, starring Cate Blanchett and Jack Black.
“The estate’s co-executors say Jackson loved to give his fans the ‘latest and greatest in technology and entertainment experiences,’” per Billboard. The original short film/music video was directed by John Landis and premiered at the AVCO Theater in Los Angeles in 1983. The 3D version of the film premiered at the 2017 Venice Film Festival.
“Thriller” is considered a triumph for artist visuals. It is the first music video in history to be recognized by the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, a selection of films deemed worthy of preservation. While the video continues to be culturally-significant, MJ’s Thriller album recently made headlines when it lost its long-standing spot as the highest-selling album of all time. The title now belongs to The Eagles’ Greatest Hits.
