Missy Elliott is finally getting the praises and respect she deserves. The Virginia-bred rapper has reportedly been nominated to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, according to the Associated Press. The incredible nomination makes her the first female rapper to ever accomplish such a feat in the hall of fame’s history.
Missy responded to the huge honor on Twitter Wednesday (Nov. 7). “I am Humbly Grateful to be nominated with so many other AMAZING writers,” she wrote. Mariah Carey has also been nominated.
While Elliott has had a very successful solo rap career, she has also written hit songs for a number of your favorite artists, including Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, Monica, Lil Kim, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, SWV, and many more. Songs like “So Gone,” which was performed by Monica and “Lady Marmalade” still sit high on fan playlists.
If Missy is inducted, she will be the third of only three rappers to earn this honor. JAY-Z became the first rapper to be inducted in Jun. 2017, followed by Jermaine Dupri in 2018.
Only six six songwriters or groups will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The 50th annual Induction & Awards Gala will take place in New York on June 13, 2019.
