During a recent appearance on T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle, R&B superstar Monica revealed that in addition to being an entertainer, she also works in the family business as a mortician. That’s right, Miss Thang has been working at her uncle Gus Thornhill’s funeral home when she’s not performing.
“I grew up around it, I started in like 2013,” she explained, also noting that she doesn’t “get the chills” working with the deceased. “I kept it quiet, it’s a family business. When I’m back there, I really wanted to learn as much as I could, to do the best that I could for the families that allow me to work with them… I just felt like it was important that people know that you can do other stuff. Yeah, I sing, but that was just another passion.”
Monica also pointed out that she enjoys working as a mortician because she wants to bring peace to families during the trying times that come with death. She also gave advice to others who are in the mortician business.
“This calling is about bringing peace to families, it’s not about your personal feelings,” she continued. “Do and give your absolute best, this is a time where the family will need you most… it’s hard when you go to a funeral and somebody does not look like the person you remember. I grew up around it…and I know how important those final moments are.”
When asked about if she would have helped the Bush family after the recent passing of former President George H.W. Bush, she said ‘yes,’ because she would have wanted to help a family who needed it, regardless of their political affiliation.
Very interesting and also very beautiful. Watch her explanation above.
